The process of portraying one ‘side’ as good/superior and the other as bad/inferior is known as Manichaeanism, a clear example of which occurred during the Anglo-Boer War. Between 1899 and 1902, Britain was involved in a bloody conflict with Dutch-descended Afrikaners (or Boers) in southern Africa. The Boer republics of the Transvaal and Orange Free State were established in the middle of the nineteenth century, but the discovery of gold in the Transvaal in 1884 lured countless numbers of British miners and prospectors to settle in the area.

We would expect them to start this new task in July, commencing preparations immediately. In spite of these changes significant pressures remain on the Armed Forces if they are to meet the full range of their commitments. In order to meet our continuing obligations in Iraq, I have authorised the issuing of further call-out notices, against the Order made in January under section 54(1) of the Reserve Forces Act 1996, sufficient to generate up to 1,200 reservists. There will be a requirement to call out further reservists as the operation proceeds, and I will keep the House informed of our plans.
