A more popular mounting for a plane grating that has been widely used in astronomy is the Czerny– Turner mounting, which was first described in 1930 by M. Czerny and A. F. Turner [160]. It comprises two spherical concave mirrors, one acting as a collimator, the other as a camera, and of equal focal length. The coma of one balances that of the other, 25 thus giving a good overall aberration correction. The Czerny–Turner mounting was used, for example, in the large McMath–Hulbert solar spectrograph at the University of Michigan in 1955 [161] – see Fig.

Joseph Fraunhofer was easily the most prominent of the early experimenters with gratings. His first transmission gratings consisted of fine parallel wires between two screws. Initially there was only one wire per millimetre, but he soon produced wire gratings with up to 13 wires per millimetre, and with this device he was able to measure the deviations of several dark lines in the solar spectrum to obtain the wavelengths [4]. Fraunhofer went on to produce reflection gratings ruled with a diamond in a thin layer of gold leaf on glass.

7 G R AT I N G M O U N T I N G S F O R L A B O R AT O RY AND ASTRONOMICAL SPECTROGRAPHS The mounting of a grating concerns the optical arrangement of how light from the slit is delivered to the grating and from there to the photographic plate or detector, the type and arrangement of the collimator and camera optical elements, and the mechanical movements of the grating or other components required for changing the wavelength region seen by the detector. Early grating spectroscopes generally had light passing to the grating from a refracting collimator, and a small refracting telescope was used to view the spectrum.
