Nevertheless, in order to avoid conflict, only one of the processors can provide the output result. A special change-over unit continuously tests both processors and whenever a fault is located in one module it could easily change over the output control to the standby module, without any loss of data and without the system user feeling it. This system structure also has the advantage that it is possible to service one processor without disturbing the operations of the other processor, or, in other words, without affecting the systems functional operations.

In a shared transmission channel where the channel resources are randomly assigned (as in A L O H A scheme), the channel can reach a saturation point which consequently brings all the data traffic to a complete standstill. SYSTEM BEHAVIOUR UNDER FAULTY CONDITIONS COMPLETE FAILURE FAIL-SOFT SYSTEM DEGRADATION SHUT-DOWN OF SERVICES I F i g . 31 The FAIL-TOLERANT • system behaviour after FULL RECOVERY OF SERVICES a fault is detected As already pointed out, failures in the system operation cannot be 2 avoided, whether in the communication or C system; nevertheless, means can be introduced to reduce their effect on the system's performance.

During this time a whole sequence of events can occur, each of them causing a maximum load traffic condition of the communication network. Nevertheless, it is possible to identify within this critical duration a period, say ten minutes, where the system operation reaches a peak. To avoid a system task failure, certain preventive decisions must be made within this period. In other words, this peak period is generally shorter than the real-time of the system. The information displayed during this period is constructed by output data volume of the nodes.
