Keeping the optical train the same removes the chances for variations to creep in when you change out a piece of equipment. Another thing to keep in mind is “mirror flop”. Older SCTs are notorious for this. This is due to the design of the focus mechanism. The focuser is basically a threaded rod that moves the primary mirror in and out. The mount should: • Have a payload capacity capable of carrying not only the telescope, but all the photographic gear you will use. The general rule of thumb here is the mount capacity should be twice the equipment load for astrophotography. So 40 lbs of telescope, and 5 lbs of photographic gear require a mount with a 90 lb load capacity. This keeps the strain on the mount down and makes the tracking smoother. You can push that limit a bit with a high quality mount. • Have a low periodic error (this is the inherent wobble caused when two sets of gears mesh and rotate).
