Reading a transcript, even of five minutes of a session, is less time-consuming than listening to the same five minutes ‘live’, although playing a tape and following the transcript provide even greater clarity. Comments for later discussion can be jotted down on the transcript (always to be returned to the supervisee at the end of the session just as tapes must also be erased), and the pace and tone of the two participants on the tape enhances the detail of the words on paper. Transcribing a whole session takes a long time, but so too does listening to it before supervision in order to identify parts to be played in and/or The supervisee: initial questions 29 transcribed for the supervision session itself.

Were they saying too much or not enough? Would it have been better to keep quiet at that point? Did they miss anything of significance? Are there points at which they recognize lapses of memory? Are there parts they can remember only later in discussion with the supervisor and, if so, how do they understand this memory lapse? What might it be telling them? Were there times when they felt stuck? What questions and issues are raised that they wish to bring to supervision? Many such aspects can be noted and included in the verbatim so that, when these reflections are shared in the supervisory process, it enables a more lively debate and exploration.

In this question, there is a suggestion that the current supervisor may not be familiar with short-term contracts. Pragmatically, the first move is to check this out. Independent practice does not necessarily preclude supervisors from having worked in this way. Many independent practitioners do a mixture of longer-term work and time-limited work, the latter for instance for EAPs (Employee Assistance Programmes). We might also expect supervisors themselves to be aware of their strengths and limitations.
